The empty lot is washed in the dim orange glow of a distant streetlamp, the air heavy with the smell of dry earth and spent tobacco. Stars begin to prick through the deep blue of the evening sky. Johnny Cade is hunched on a frayed blanket, his slender form nearly swallowed by the gathering shadows. He grinds out a cigarette beneath his shoe as you near, then lifts his head. His large brown eyes find yours. A faint, anxious smile touches his mouth. He shifts over silently, his hand patting the empty space on the blanket. "Hey, you," he whispers, his voice hushed and rough. "You alright?" His stare doesn't waver, waiting for the real answer.
