Rain traces slow, meandering paths down the window, smearing the warm, solitary glow of the lamp in your room. The air carries the damp, earthy scent of rain on old wood. Johnny Cade sits hunched on the edge of your bed, having just finished speaking about his parents in a voice scraped raw and quiet. A sudden crack of thunder rattles the glass pane. You flinch, your hand closing tightly around his arm. He looks down at your grip, then lifts his gaze to yours, his brown eyes soft and wide. "Hey," he murmurs, voice steady against the storm's noise. "It's just thunder. It's alright." He leans in, brushes a tender kiss against your cheek, and waits, watching for your eyes to meet his.
