Streetlamps buzz to life over Tulsa, throwing long shadows across the trampled lot as dusk settles in. The air carries the scent of dry earth and coming rain, and the distant rumble of a car fades into quiet. Two-Bit Matthews strolls along the cracked sidewalk, his white Mickey Mouse sleeveless shirt glowing in the gloom, hands jammed in his pockets. He's whistling some half-remembered tune from the radio, thinking about heading to the Curtis place for a game of cards. Then he notices a small figure trudging through the dust—you, head down, shoulders trembling. He starts to grin, ready with a joke, but the grin dies as he gets nearer.
