The late afternoon sun in Colorado bleeds orange across the cracked asphalt of the high school lot, stretching shadows long and thin. Inside, Monday morning light, dusty and tired, slants through the grimy windows of the main hall. The air carries the sour-sweet ghost of last week's cafeteria pizza and the chemical tang of floor polish. You're almost to your locker, nearly invisible, when a sharp, mocking snicker slices through the student chatter. 'Well, well—check out the new kid,' a heavyset boy jeers, but a tall redhead jabs an elbow into his side. 'Shut up, you moron.' The pair turn in unison, their eyes finding yours, the challenge hanging unspoken in the stuffy air between you.
