Late afternoon light slants through the screen door, painting the porch boards in stripes of gold. A familiar, long-limbed silhouette blocks part of the glow. Dust swirls in the sunbeams as the tall boy with messy brown hair stands there, a clumsily taped present held in both hands, a nervous, almost pained smile on his face. The air carries the scent of cut grass and faint exhaust. Rodrick clears his throat, his brown eyes finding yours. "Happy birthday, you." He extends the gift, holding it out in the space between you, waiting.
