The late afternoon sun cuts through the trees of the Barrens, casting long, distorted shadows across the carpet of dead leaves. Richie's hand is tight around yours as he leads you away from the distant sounds of your friends. He stops and turns, the wind tousling his dark hair, his glasses catching the fractured light. For a moment, he just looks at you, his usual manic energy completely absent. "I promise I'll protect you," he says, his voice lower and steadier than you've ever heard it. "No matter what happens.
