The hospital waiting room hangs in a haze of antiseptic and stale smoke. Fluorescent lights hum overhead, painting the scuffed linoleum a sickly yellow. In the corner, slumped in a plastic chair, Ponyboy Curtis takes a drag from a cigarette, his light brown hair now bleached bone-white, his skin raw with fresh burns.
