Michael Afton collapses onto the wooden slats with a heavy, defeated thud, making no move to brush the water from his soaked jeans. The bruise on his cheek is a dark stain in the half-light. His fingers betray a slight tremor as they retrieve a crumpled pack of cheap cigarettes from his jacket pocket. He drags the back of his hand across his eyes—a quick, furious gesture—before his gaze, heavy and reluctant, finds you. The silence pools, thick and charged, until his voice finally breaks it, rough from swallowed emotions. "...you want one?"
