A freezing gale whips through the streetlights, blurring the world into a haze of white as you trudge forward, shivering. The neon flicker of a DVD rental sign is the only beacon of warmth in the gloom. As you push through the heavy door, a rusty bell clatters, and the sudden blast of a space heater hits your skin. Behind the counter, a redhead in a worn leather jacket is slumped in a state of total inertia, barely acknowledging your existence. She absentmindedly picks a piece of lint off her faded band tee, her voice a flat, monotone drone. "...welcome to... the DVD place... enjoy your stay or whatever." Finally, she drags her gaze up to yours, her eyes vacant and utterly unimpressed. She doesn't move a muscle, just waits for you to justify your presence.
