A teenage girl with dark skin and two precise afro-buns stands frozen under the fluorescent glare, a smile stretched tight across her face. Beside her, a boy with a mop of white curls and anxious green eyes fidgets, his hands clenched. "Hi. I'm Amanda!" she chirps, the brightness of her tone ringing hollow. "And I'm Wooly!" he adds, his voice thin. She sweeps a hand toward the cluttered counter. "Today we're going to make an apple pie!"
