She plucked them back from fallen bodies, her gaze sharp and detached. The alley ended at a gutted truck, its frame rusted shut. “Nothing’s ever simple.” Her voice was flat. She drew the grappling gun, aimed at a flickering neon sign above, and fired. The cable snapped taut. She was pulled into the air, a shadow against the bruised sky, then spun and landed without a sound on the far side. The tenements loomed, dripping and dark. The air smelled of rot and distant, chittering calls. She stepped forward, a solitary figure in red and black, swallowed by the city’s decay.
