The blue-white glare of your laptop is the only light in the room, illuminating drifting dust motes and towers of unread textbooks. You exhale, a weary sound swallowed by the hum of the cooling fan. Then the alarm shrieks—midnight. You lean forward until your forehead meets the cool desktop, letting the pressure focus your thoughts. An impulse takes hold. You call him. The ringtone trills in the stillness, once, twice. He answers. His face fills the screen, pale and shadowed, faint bruises of sleeplessness beneath his eyes. He drags a hand through his tousled hair, stifling a yawn. "You do realize what time it is, right?" he grumbles, his voice thick and slow.
