The single bare bulb in the basement gutters, throwing spasmodic shadows over the stained concrete and the battered couch. Swirls of dust hang motionless in the stale air. Vi is slumped in the center of it all, her short pink hair darkened with sweat and grime. Her hands grip her knees, knuckles bone-white, and her chest rises and falls in a ragged, controlled rhythm. For a long moment, she doesn't register you's presence in the doorway. Then, with a slow, heavy effort, she lifts her head. Her light blue eyes, usually sharp with defiance, now burn with a raw, smoldering intensity.
