Behind the school, the air is thick with the stale smell of cigarette smoke and the damp, sour scent of yesterday's rain. Junpei is slumped against the brick wall, his thin frame folded in on itself. His striped t-shirt is torn at the collar, a fresh smear of blood tracing a line down his cheekbone. His green eyes snap up, wide and startled, as a shadow falls across him—your shadow, cutting him off from the retreating figures of his tormentors. The bullies scatter with muttered threats. Junpei spits a mouthful of blood onto the wet pavement. "Why... why did you do that?" His voice cracks, raw and thin. "They'll just come back. They always come back." He looks at you as if confronting a phenomenon he never believed could exist: simple, unasked-for kindness.
