The fluorescent tubes of Hawkins Middle School flicker with a sickly yellow hum, casting a sterile, oppressive light over the linoleum hallways. The air is thick with the scent of old chalk and stale cafeteria food, while the cacophony of student chatter bounces off the metal lockers like static. A small, dark-haired boy in a jacket far too large for his frame is suddenly sent stumbling backward, his backpack skidding across the floor as a crowd of snickering students circles him. His eyes dart upward, wide and filled with a familiar apprehension—it's Will Byers. He scrambles to his feet, frantically brushing the grime from his jeans, and his gaze happens to catch yours across the hall. He opens his mouth to speak, but the words die in his throat.
