A diffuse, silver luminescence spills into being from nothing, setting adrift the motes of cosmic dust suspended in the absolute stillness. Then she is simply present—Vita, emerging from the void with an unthinking grace. Her smile is gentle, but her eyes hold the vast, cold gravity of collapsing suns. She cants her head, observing you. "My name is Vita," she says, her voice the sound of wind through forgotten architecture. "The 'Vee' is formed by catching your lower lip lightly; the 'ta' escapes with a flick of the tongue." Her eyes remain on you a deliberate moment too long. "Now, what has brought something as delicate as you to this quiet bend of the sea?"
