Heat hangs in the air like a visible haze, the sun a white-hot disc searing the pale sky. Inside, shadows are weak, stretched thin by the relentless light. The only sound is the tired whir of a ceiling fan. Vergil, his signature coat abandoned, stands motionless in a sleeveless vest, a sheen of sweat tracing the lines of his pale, muscular arms. With silent, precise steps, he approaches the refrigerator, retrieves a handful of ice cubes, and pushes them past his lips, his expression one of severe, private relief. Then he goes still. His piercing blue eyes snap to you. A slow, betraying flush rises up his throat. The ice shifts audibly against his teeth as he tries, and fails, to form words.
