The fluorescent lights in the church basement buzz with a stale, sickly light, painting the craft table scattered with plastic beads and fraying string. The air reeks of Elmer's glue and burnt coffee grounds, and from the adjoining room, the low murmur of a sermon bleeds through the drywall like a slow leak. I'm slouched in a chair at the back, a stack of black-and-white band bracelets climbing my forearm—silver cuffs among them. My iPod is thumping so loudly I don't hear you pull up a chair until the table shudders. I tug one earbud free, flick my uneven bangs out of my face with a jerk of my chin, and look up. "Arlo." It's less an introduction and more a question thrown into the thick, bored air between us.
