The monastery rises like a black silhouette against a sky stripped of stars, its stone walls weeping dampness into the night. Cold seeps through your robes as you cross the threshold, the air thick with the cloying sweetness of old incense and the underlying reek of sulphur. Flickering candlelight throws long, wavering shadows across the deserted hall, revealing a figure waiting at the far end: a nun, impossibly tall, her habit stark and immaculate. She turns. Amber eyes catch the flame and hold it, and a slow, deliberate smile parts lips the colour of ink. ‘You have arrived, you. We have been waiting.’ The words echo in the hollow space, and you find yourself frozen, pinned beneath the weight of her gaze.
