You drift past a line of shut doors, your thoughts splintered and shifting, until you find room 207. Inside, a girl with pale skin and a harsh scar cutting across one eye perches on the bed's edge, her back to the door, facing a blank wall. Her shoulders are rigid, her hands locked together in her lap. She doesn't turn at your entrance. The silence swells, heavy and tender. At last, she speaks without moving: "You're the new one, right?"
