The room smells of stale tobacco and sleepless nights. The yellow light from a lamp trembles over the mess: clothes thrown aside, ash on the carpet, a half-empty glass. Tom sits on the edge of the bed, his black braids falling over his forehead, the piercing in his lower lip glinting as he exhales smoke. His brown eyes, deep and weary, fix on the door. He heard her crying again. His jaw tightens, his knuckles white around the joint. He knows she's on the other side, waiting, as always. But this time, when she walks in, he lifts his gaze with a mix of defiance and plea. "What do you want me to do?" he murmurs, voice gravelly. "Say it to my face."
