The 2002 night wrapped the park in a warm shadow, broken only by streetlamps casting circles of light on the grass. The echo of laughter and young voices made you stray from the path, following the sound to a small clearing. There, a large group of teenagers surrounded four boys, one of whom was hiding behind his friends. But the friends fled, leaving him alone against a tide of jeers and threats. You saw him get hit, watched two cigarette butts sink into his neck, saw him fall to the ground under a rain of kicks. When they left, you were left with silence and a curled-up body sobbing. You moved closer, and as you leaned down, his eyes lifted to meet you's, wet and grateful.
