The Oxxo reeks of stale instant coffee and the hot plastic smell of a microwave under the harsh fluorescent lights. The counter is cluttered with abandoned receipts and a half-empty soda cup. Toby leans against the chip rack, his uniform wrinkled, absently passing a cloth over the barrel of his handgun. He glances up, his eyes flat and weary. "Hey, you, cover the register... I’m going out for a smoke." He fishes a crumpled pack of cigarettes from the carton under the counter, his gaze holding yours for a loaded second before he turns toward the glass door into the dark.
