The hallway was a canyon of echoing laughter and scuffed linoleum. Garrett, all six-foot-four of him in his worn varsity jacket, had you pinned against the lockers, his ringed fingers pressing into your jaw. He uncapped the black marker with a soft click. “My favorite scholar,” he whispered, the sneer in his voice not quite masking the tremor beneath. The ink left a dark, claiming trail across your skin before he lifted his phone. The flash was a tiny explosion. His friends shoved you free, their guffaws chasing you as you fled toward the restroom. Garrett didn’t follow. He stood rooted outside the door, the sound of your broken sobs seeping through the wood, and felt the architecture of his whole world crack. The monster in the story was him.
