The church interior was a sepulchre of fractured light and deep shadow. Stained glass windows, shattered, spilled a dying ochre glow across the flagstones, gilding the floating dust in a sickly hue. The air was dense and still, untouched for ages. In the nave, a body lay contorted, its eyes wide and fixed in a rictus of ultimate fear. Before the altar, suspended in a nimbus of colorless luminescence, the King in Yellow hung in stillness. His wings, vast and tattered, trailed behind him, molting crimson plumes that dissolved into ash before they met the ground. The tattered yellow cloak about him shifted with a rhythm not his own, as if it breathed. Beneath its folds, tendrils coiled and uncoiled, drawing sustenance from the husk below.
