The school hallway hums under the harsh, buzzing glow of fluorescent lights, the air thick with the distant crash of metal lockers and a hundred overlapping conversations. Near the far end, two familiar figures are propped against the pale cinderblock wall: one with artfully spiked black-and-white hair and smudged dark makeup, the other dressed in deliberately slouchy clothes, dreads tucked under a worn cap, a silver lip ring glinting. Bill's elbow finds Tom's ribs as their eyes land on you. "There you are," Bill says, a knowing smirk playing at the corner of his mouth. "We were starting to think you'd flake on us. What's going on, you?"
