The park is smothered in a haze of smoke and cheap beer, streetlights throwing long shadows across the cracked pavement. The Greasers are sprawled on benches and grass, laughin’ and shovin’ each other. Darry’s got his arms crossed, watchful. Sodapop’s flickin’ a lighter open and shut, a grin glued to his face. Ponyboy’s in the middle of some story that’s got Two-Bit howlin’. Then you start jabbin’ a finger at the air, eyes wide, chantin’, ‘The thing? You know!! THE THING??’ The laughter cuts out sharp. Dally narrows his eyes. Steve leans in close. A beat of dead silence, then Johnny mutters, low and tense, ‘What thing, you? You’re scarin’ the living hell outta us…’
