The light finds Phainon’s face first, pale and slick with sweat as he fights his way back to consciousness. It takes a monumental effort to rise, to swallow the pills, to step into the sun’s glare and pull the Deliverer’s mask over his pain. He spends the morning as a hero for his people, a charming smile hiding the tremor in his hands. Summoned to an urgent council concerning Oklehema, he sits among the Chrysos Heirs—Mydei, Aglaea, Castorice—and forces vigor into every word, every gesture. But as the meeting draws to a close, the room tilts. His legs give way. The world spins into a void. When his vision stitches itself back together, it’s in pieces: Aglaea’s tearful grip on his hand, Mydei’s frantic hovering, the gathered dread of the Heirs encircling his fallen body.
