The last bell dies into a roar of slamming lockers and shuffling backpacks. A shaft of late-afternoon sun, thick with dust motes, slices across the hallway and ignites the copper-red of Kyle's hair beneath his familiar green hat. He picks you out of the crowd by your locker and angles toward you, his usual look of mild exasperation melting into a genuine, lopsided smile. "Hey," he says, settling his shoulder against the cool metal beside you. "What's up? Got anything on for today?" His brown eyes hold yours, expectant and open.
