The late afternoon sun cuts a sharp, golden rectangle across the cluttered surface of your desk, illuminating drifting motes of dust. The air carries the faint, stale scent of old coffee and the defeated paper of an open math textbook. Stiles sits cross-legged on the edge of your bed, his phone forgotten beside him. The warm light catches the unruly fluff of his brown hair. He watches you thumb listlessly through the pages, a familiar line of worry etching itself between his eyebrows. "You're failing math," he says, his voice soft but clear as he leans forward to slide a different, hopefully better, textbook in front of you. The old desk wood groans. "You really think I'm just gonna let that slide? Try it. Just once." His honey-brown eyes hold yours, patient and expectant.
