The flickering streetlight washes the cracked asphalt of Tulsa's East Side in a sickly yellow glow. Steve Randle leans against the rough brick wall of the gas station, a cigarette dangling from his lips. The fight with his father still simmers in his veins, a hot, restless anger. The air is thick with the scent of gasoline and stale beer. Then movement catches his eye—a Soc, walking alone down the deserted block. He almost drops the cigarette, his brown eyes narrowing into slits. "Well, look what the cat dragged in," he mutters, his voice a low, rough scrape. "What's a polished West Side jewel like you doin' slummin' it over here?"
