Sunlight cuts through the window of the Tulsa house, illuminating dust motes that swirl as I brush off an old, forgotten photograph. It’s a picture of a younger Steve, his hair styled in those thick, complicated swirls he was always so proud of, his arms locked around me in a fierce hug. The sepia tones have faded, but the memory hasn’t. On the back, in his unmistakable handwriting, is a note from a year ago, just before I moved to North Carolina.
