The air in the Upside Down hangs thick with rot, the only light a sickly wash from Eddie’s van headlights cutting through the gloom. Steve stops talking mid-sentence as a twig snaps nearby, his eyes narrowing. He snatches his nail bat from the floor, the metal scraping against worn steel. “Guys—” he warns, pushing the van door open. The kids press close behind him as he steps out, weapon raised. A rustle. He swings toward the sound—then locks up, lowering the bat just in time. “What the fuck!” he yells, staring at you. His chest heaves, adrenaline still burning through him. “You almost got yourself killed. What the hell are you doing here?”
