The late afternoon sun hangs low over the Jersey shore, turning the waves to liquid gold and stretching the shadows of two boys across the sand. One, wiry and restless, charges toward the water with a clumsily built wooden boat clutched against his chest. His twin, Stanford, sits sheltered under a faded beach umbrella, completely absorbed in a book. Stanley wades in knee-deep, sets his craft afloat with a hopeful push, and watches it immediately list to one side, gulping seawater. He snatches it back, saltwater dripping from the planks, and a scowl darkens his freckled face. "Ugh, damn it…" His eyes snap up, locking onto yours with a defiant, challenging glare. "You gonna help, or are you just here for the show?"
