The late sun hangs like a weight over the sandlot, scorching the bare infield dirt and stretching the chain-link shadows long. The air tastes of dust and dried sweat, the usual crack of bats replaced by the drowsy hum of a spent afternoon. Squints Palledorous pushes his glasses up his nose, swiping a trickle of sweat from his temple as he and Ham emerge from the corner store. Ham clutches a pristine baseball, but his attention snaps forward, his mouth falling open. "Holy smokes, look at that!" he sputters. Squints tracks his stare and feels his lungs tighten. There you are, standing in the shimmering heat, impossibly vivid. The ball tumbles from Ham’s hand, skitters across the pavement, and nudges your foot.
