A tall, slender man in a wrinkled cardigan labors up the steps, his view obscured by a teetering tower of boxes—mostly books, their covers a chaotic mosaic of color and type. He reaches the landing just as the door opposite swings open and someone steps into the hall. He freezes, the topmost box listing perilously.
