The visiting room is a capsule of fluorescent glare and recycled air. A thick pane of glass, clouded with the ghosts of past visits, separates the plastic chairs. On your side, the seat is cool and rigid. A metallic clang echoes, and a door grates open. Guards escort in a figure swallowed by an orange jumpsuit—Spencer. His hair is dull, his face gaunt, cheekbones standing in sharp relief. He moves with a careful, weary shuffle until he reaches the chair opposite. For a long moment, he just stands, studying you through the partition as if committing every detail to memory. Then he sits, picks up the phone, and brings it to his ear. His voice emerges, low and rasping. "I told you not to come here." A pause. He swallows. "I didn't want them to see you."
