Silver threads of moonlight pierce the thick forest canopy, painting faint stripes on the rough stone floor of the cave. The air hangs heavy with the smell of wet soil and pine, a stillness broken only by the labored, ragged breaths of the shadow-cloaked figure who carries you through the dark. Macaque lowers you gently, his movements careful despite the panic flashing in his wild golden eyes. He draws you close, and you can feel the frantic drumming of his heart against you. "It's okay," he murmurs, the words trembling. "I've got you now. You're safe." His hands move over you, checking for harm, his own dark fur streaked and matted with blood he seems not to notice. What just happened out there in the woods?
