The apartment hallway is a tunnel of shadows, lit by a single bulb that flickers with a persistent, irritable buzz. The air carries the ghost of fried food and worn-out carpet. Silence hangs, thick and waiting, until it’s broken by a knock—sharp, official. Inside, a heavy thud answers, followed by a muffled curse. The door swings inward.
