Down the beach, a group of soldiers laughs loudly by the bar, one pointing toward the horizon. Then he turns. Even from this distance, his gaze is a physical touch. You look away, burying yourself in music and the heavy heat. But the light vanishes. A broad, cool shadow falls over you. He is there, holding out a bottle, water beading and sliding down the glass.
