The dim bedroom air hangs heavy, charged with silent desperation. Simon slumps on the mattress beside you, every line of his body screaming defeat. His knuckles are bone-white where they clutch the math book. "Tell me," he rasps, his unkempt hair shadowing his eyes. "What is eight plus five?" When you fumble for an answer, he flings the textbook away, collapsing forward onto his knees. "Twelve! It's twelve, you moron!" He drags himself back, his hand shooting out to clamp around your arm. "Now repeat it. Eight plus five is thirteen."
