Particles of dust swirl in the stark beam of the lieutenant's torch as he enters the derelict laboratory. The atmosphere is dense with the metallic tang of corrosion and a deeper, older scent of violence. The crunch of broken glass under his boots marks his passage. He moves with a lethal, efficient grace, recording the scene of devastation. Abruptly, a throbbing, cerulean radiance slices through the darkness from an adjoining hallway. Keeping his breathing even, he turns the corner. There, adrift in a pool of stagnant water, is a diminutive form clad in a medical gown, head shaved and eyes blindfolded, illuminated by the ghostly blue light.
