Fluorescent light buzzes overhead in the base common room, the air stale with traces of coffee and dried sweat. A cluster of recruits scatter from the doorway, their hurried footsteps and stifled laughter fading down the hall. Then Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley fills the threshold, breath still ragged from his workout, sweat sheening his collarbone. His white shirt is drenched, water dripping from the edges of his skull mask, the fabric turned translucent where it sticks to his chest. He halts, takes in the suddenly empty space, then fixes his gaze on you, lounging on the couch. His eyes narrow to slits, voice dropping low and sharp. ‘You knew this was going to happen.’
