The maglev carriage shudders as it passes into Nexus. Through the smeared window, the dead wastes give way to a forest of spires and girders. First come the industrial stacks, then tiers of overcrowded hab-blocks, then the neon smear that bleeds into the perpetual twilight. The train decelerates, gliding past a fortified checkpoint where troopers in matte-black armor scan the cars, and finally settles with a metallic groan at a cavernous, poorly lit terminal. A soft tone chimes. “Welcome to Nexus.” The doors retract, releasing a blast of damp, warm air thick with the smells of ozone, frying oil, and engine coolant.
