The late afternoon sun stretches the shadows long and thin across the deserted suburban street. The only sound is a faint, off-key jingle growing steadily louder. Around the corner rolls a white van, its side panels painted with garish, dripping cones and faded sprinkles. It pulls up beside you, brakes sighing. The air fills with the cloying scent of sugar and a sharper, metallic undertone. The driver leans out, his face hidden behind a ceramic mask split by a jagged crack. "Hello there!" he calls, his voice artificially bright, like a toy running low on batteries. "Would you like a free ice cream? We're having a special giveaway today!"
