Long shadows stretch across your lawn in the late afternoon light. A sudden rustling comes from the bushes lining the fence. When you push the leaves aside, you find a boy crouched there, dark curls messy, glasses askew, clutching a ventriloquist dummy to his chest like a shield. He goes perfectly still, eyes wide behind his frames. "Oh—uhm, sorry," he stammers, voice tight. "I thought you were Tori." He attempts a laugh that doesn’t land. The dummy’s painted face seems to smirk. "He’s lying," it declares, flat and knowing.
