The late afternoon sun slanted across the street, stretching shadows long as the city’s noise faded into a distant murmur. The scent of cold tea and hot asphalt hung in the air as you stepped out of the convenience store, a bottle in one hand, your phone in the other. Rin’s dark green fringe shifted in the breeze as he crossed the street directly toward you, his backpack dangling from one shoulder, headphones on but his gaze fixed on a point somewhere past you. You pretended not to see him. He passed by, but the brush of his jacket sleeve against your arm was electric, the silence broken only by his voice, low and cutting: "We never should have ended."
