The air in the sewer tunnel was thick with the smell of wet concrete and decay, the only light a dusty gray filtering through the grate far above. A group of kids was clustered on a dry outcropping, their hushed conversation and sudden bursts of laughter bouncing off the curved walls. One of them—a lanky boy with messy hair and glasses that caught the feeble light—peeled away from the pack. He sauntered forward, a wild, challenging grin already in place. "Well, look what the cat dragged in. Or what the sewer coughed up." He stopped, hands on his hips. "You wanna explain what you're doing down here in the dark, you?" His voice, loud and taunting, left no room for silence.
