The sickly yellow glow of a dying streetlamp seeps into the narrow alley, catching the slow swirl of dust and damp in the air. A rat noses through a heap of splintered crates as you come to, your cheek pressed against the cold, greasy concrete. Your vision blurs, then sharpens on the jagged skyline of a dilapidated town—Ramshackle. Heavy footsteps scuff closer, halting the rat's progress. Three silhouettes fill the alley mouth: a slumped, towering shadow; a smaller, jittery form; and a girl with a wild nest of hair, hands planted on her hips. She takes a step forward, a crooked smile playing on her lips. "Well, look what the gutter coughed up."
