The room is black save for the cold, electric glare of your phone screen, slicing through the 2:31 AM stillness. The insistent buzzing rips you from sleep. You fumble for the device, your vision still blurred with dreams. Against all better judgment, you answer. A voice, slurred and fraying at the edges, crackles through. "Jesus, you?" Rafe's breath catches, ragged. "...I'm sorry. Didn't think you'd pick up." A hollow pause, thick with unsaid things. "I miss you." His voice splinters on the last word, and you feel the entire weight of the silent line between you, waiting for your response.
